Food bank latest news and needs!

Over the last few months we have been busier than ever at the food bank and I would like to say a BIG thank you for the on-going support from St John’s. We had our busiest day ever on the Wednesday before Christmas when we fed 105 adults and children and at the same time received about 400Kg of donations. For part of the morning we had nine volunteers working flat out and it was still hard to keep up. Although we have not been as busy as that since we are regularly seeing more people than we have in the past.

There is a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers who keep the show on the road, but we really need more people to join us so that we can effectively give the time needed to helping the people who attend our food bank. There are a variety of different roles that we need filling and I have listed them below.

St Boniface Church: Open Wednesday mornings
We need volunteers to help with welcoming clients and/or packing the food parcels. Volunteers generally attend every 4-6 weeks.

The Coffee Shop: (Castle Rd West and formerly known as Paul & Barney’s): open Friday mornings
We need volunteers to help with welcoming clients and/or packing the food parcels. Volunteers generally attend every 4-6 weeks.

Collecting and Delivering Stock:  We need drivers with a car suitable for carrying reasonable loads to collect from supermarket collection points and take to one of the food bank stores. There may also be the occasional collection from schools, generally around Harvest Festival time. This is on more of an ad hoc basis. Volunteers need to be able to lift reasonably heavy loads

Project Worker for Signposting Project: We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and likes ‘a bit of a project’. We have a ‘signposting folder’ at each of our centres which contains information about where they may get further help and advice. The folders are in urgent need of updating. We would love to have someone who could take this on. They would need access to the internet and phone as well as computer skills in preparing Word documents. Support would be provided.

All relevant training will be provided for all volunteers including how food banks function, confidentiality, safeguarding and health and safety.
