Litter Picking - March 2021

A surprisingly fun time was had as ten people in five teams went out on Saturday morning and four teams (including a whole family) in the afternoon. The purpose was to clear litter from the St Peters parish Harborne and parts of Edgbaston. The weather was kind if cold but once the litter pickers started working there was a warmth that kept us going.

Very quickly black bags mounted up and with the help of an abandoned supermarket trolley large amounts of rubbish were taken to fill the bins at St Peters Church. Other roads required cars to collect the mountain of bags and some bags which were beginning to split had to be collected later.

The encounters with the residents were interesting but they were universally grateful. It was evident that this demonstration of care was well received and provided a bridge into the community. The trapped nature of some lives was evident making us aware of the need for help towards wellbeing which as a Church we could meet.

Everyone involved whether from St Peters or from St Johns Churches expressed a desire to do litter picking again.

I hear the cry ‘Why not in Harborne’ but we found that there are regular litter clearances down the main High Street. However, maybe if you see litter in your road then a black bag and some pickers off the internet would be your solution.
