Heidi Helbig Serving with Global Aid Network (GAIN) UK, Humanitarian Partner of Agapé UK Summer 2023
Ukraine
As the war in Ukraine continues, so does our help to those who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihood. Since December, the need in Ukraine switched to food and GAiN UK, in collaboration with other partners, have sent 5 trucks, each containing 30-32 pallets of food, weighing around 18 tons. These have helped a lot of IDPs (Internally Displaced Person) who have to start their lives somewhere new, where jobs are scarce and help from the government is very basic. We have a new partner, Cru Ukraine, which is the same organisation as Agapé, but based in Ukraine. They started new ministries like the chaplaincy ministry serving soldiers returning from war and ministry amongst sexually assaulted women.
Another new ministry from Cru Ukraine is the humanitarian ministry, providing IDPs yellow boxes which contain food donations from GAiN and a weekly message about one of “The FOUR” (God’s Love, Sin, the Cross and our Response). We are very thankful for this campaign as it has proven successful at Universities and churches, resulting in people coming to Christ and Bible study groups being formed.
Last Autumn, our partners and their teams had trauma care training which has been a lifeline to them personally and to the people they minister to. Some didn’t know how to handle talking to someone who has lost loved ones and those bearing the scars of war. This coming November, there will be a second Trauma Care training in Hungary, Moldova and Ukraine organised by GAiN. Please pray for effectiveness, that many will be healed. Pray for Dr Rhoades who is leading this training. Pray for wisdom and guidance as he and his team try to help our partners and those they reach out to.
Benin LIFE trip
Water is essential to life. It’s a basic human necessity. Yet, almost one in eight people still don’t have access to safe water. Since 2002, GAiN has been providing rural villages with deep capped wells, ensuring fresh clean water for their people. We do this by drilling 50-80 metres down, tapping onto the water supply and setting up a deep capped well.
So far, together with generous partners from all over the world, we have provided almost 3,000 deep capped water wells, trained over 240,000 in hygiene and sanitation practices, trained 35,700 people in community health, helped over 160,000 people discover Jesus and established 1,000 new churches.
From the UK, we’re excited to start sponsoring these projects organised by our office in Canada. In October, we will be sending a team to Benin to experience first hand our Water for Life Initiative.
The team will be working with the GAiN Benin team in active drill operations, concrete pad construction, well flushing, football evangelism, church construction and Jesus film showing. Please pray for me, as I do the admin and preparation for the team. Pray for those going, that they will be a blessing to the villagers and that this trip will be life-changing in their commitment and service to Jesus.
