The Joys of Connecting - Catriona Foster
The sun may have struggled to break through the August skies but that didn't deter the 70 + guests and 28 team members who made their way into the warm welcome of 'Summer Connect' at St John’s.
Run on two separate Thursdays, this event provided an opportunity for Over 70’s to connect with one another during the quieter summer month of August. Many who attended don’t have any current church connection while others regularly attend the midweek service.
In true St John’s style, the days began with coffee and excellent homemade cakes. This was followed by a variety of activities including current affairs discussion, Scrabble, flower-arranging, poetry group, card-making, quizzes, carpet bowls, indoor putting, armchair exercises, and more. Guests could also opt for a relaxing hand massage or visit the ‘Tent of Meeting’ for quiet prayer and reflection. They could have 1 to 1 tuition on their tablet, phone or laptop and could even have their hearing aid serviced. Lunch was preceded by a brief ‘Thought for the Day’, and followed by a choice of entertainment or talks.
It was a joy to see so many enjoying the relaxed and social atmosphere, and to welcome so many new people into the building and into the St John’s fellowship. I am thankful for a superb volunteer team who contributed so much and in so many ways, not least in the love, friendship and care they showed to the guests.
